Abstract

Diabetes mellitus, termed "Ziabetes" in Unani medicine, has been a subject of profound medical exploration over centuries. This paper delves into the interpretations of two pivotal figures in Unani medicine, Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and Al-Razi (Rhazes), focusing on their perspectives, diagnostic criteria, and therapeutic strategies for diabetes. Ibn Sina's seminal work, "The Canon of Medicine," and Al-Razi's "Al-Hawi" serve as primary sources for this analysis. Both scholars provided detailed descriptions of diabetes, including symptoms such as excessive urination (polyuria), thirst (polydipsia), and physical wasting. Al-Razi’s innovative diagnostic method involved observing the attraction of ants to the patient's urine due to its sweetness, one of the earliest documented techniques to identify diabetes. Furthermore, Ibn Sina’s comprehensive treatment protocols emphasized dietary management and lifestyle modifications, reflecting a holistic approach that remains relevant today. This study systematically examines their contributions within the Unani framework, highlighting how their pioneering insights not only advanced the understanding of diabetes but also influenced broader medical practices. By tracing the historical evolution of their ideas and their impact on subsequent medical theories, this paper underscores the enduring significance of Ibn Sina and Al-Razi's work. Their integration of empirical observation with theoretical knowledge laid foundational principles for the diagnosis and management of diabetes, offering valuable perspectives that resonate with contemporary approaches to diabetes care. This exploration reaffirms their lasting relevance, providing a nuanced understanding of their legacy and its implications for modern medical science.
