A Systematic Review of Batting Set-up Mechanics in Cricket

Abstract

The purpose of the systematic review was to analyse the mechanics behind the set-up in cricket batting broadly. The setup is associated with key techniques like grip, stance, initial movements, and backlift/backswing. For the study, the methodology used was rigorous and systematic. A wide-ranging literature search was employed across various key databases like PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Articles peer-reviewed published in English from 1980 to 2024 were undertaken as a review. For inclusion criteria the studies that were focused directly related to cricket batting techniques as well as to fulfil the exclusion criteria out-dated information and a lack of relevance or academic rigor were included. For the review study, a total of 34 studies were acknowledged and screened for inclusion in this review. However, eleven (11) studies were directly related to the mechanics of the batting set-up in cricket which were selected for the comprehensive analysis. The important findings from the selected studies were emphasized regarding the importance and mechanics behind the grip, stance, initial movements, and backlift/backswing which directly lead to batting performance. On the other hand, the findings of the review provide valuable insights for the researchers and coaches in the field of cricket and in the application of biomechanics. Also, it recommends subjects for future research to improve our knowledge of cricket batting biomechanics.
